Brain injury treatment and rehabilitation in the multicultural society - barriers and facilitators to “cultural competence” in the multidisciplinary setting

As cultural diversity is increasing in our society, so is the need for considering approaches, diagnosis and intervention strategies with brain injured patients from different cultural backgrounds. Standards of brain injury treatment and rehabilitation in Europe and the Western world are founded on the majority culture and its values, hence there is a call for attention to provide culturally competent treatment and rehabilitation for the increasingly diverse patient population.

Barriers in working with diversity and minority culture patients in the brain injury rehabilitation setting can be many: language, compliance, social resources, and cultural values, to name a few. However, raising awareness on multi-cultural issues amongst professionals and rehabilitation service providers is essential in facilitating a better rehabilitation outcome for these individuals.

The conference takes place at The University of Copenhagen (South Campus). It is organized by the Center for Rehabilitation of Brain Injury in Copenhagen and brings together international professionals from a broad range of disciplines in order to present and discuss current research and clinical practice concerning barriers and facilitators to “cultural competence” in the multidisciplinary brain injury rehabilitation setting.
